Background
Silvia Scarpa is Adjunct Professor of Political Science at John Cabot University of Rome. Since 2013 she also teaches International Law at LUISS Guido Carli University. Her research interests include the issues of human rights and human trafficking, international migration, and the law of the sea. She holds a Ph.D. in International Human Rights Law awarded by the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa in 2006 and she worked as a consultant for various institutions, including, inter alia: the Italian Office against Racial Discrimination of the Department of Equal Opportunities; the Directorate General Justice and Consumers (JUST), the Directorate General Migration and Internal Affairs (HOME) and the Research Executive Agency (REA) of the European Commission; and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO). She is the author of the monograph entitled Trafficking in Human Beings: Modern Slavery (Oxford University Press, 2008), of the manual An Introduction to International Human Rights Standards for Law Enforcement Authorities (UniversItalia, 2012) and of articles published in relevant journals and edited collections.

Recent ACUNS Activity
Dr Silvia Scarpa participated to the Academic Council of the United Nations System (ACUNS) Annual Meeting on “Human Rights, Migration and Global Governance” that was held at LUISS Guido Carli University of Rome on July 12-14, 2018. Dr Scarpa delivered one presentation on “Human Trafficking and Contemporary Slavery Law and the Second Draft of the UN Global Compact on Migration” at the workshop panel on “International Law, Human Rights and Migration” held on July 13, and another one entitled “The Slave Auctions in Libya and States’ Responsibilities (and Vulnerabilities) in the Field of Slavery and the Slave Trade” in Plenary II on “State Responsibilities, Human Vulnerabilities: Mitigating the Consequences of Mass Displacement and Migration” held on July 14. Finally, Prof. Scarpa also chaired a workshop panel on the “Status and Law of Refugees”.
