The purpose of this symposium was to have a dialogue among policy makers, practitioners and scholars from diverse countries and backgrounds concerning East Asian contributions to UN peacekeeping and peace building activities. Diplomatic representatives of the three East Asian countries – China, Japan and the Republic of Korea – first provided overviews of their countries` engagement in UN peace operations. They were followed by critical examinations delivered by three scholars from the East Asian countries of the achievements made and challenges faced by the three countries. Finally, a panel of international experts offered their observations, and other participants of the symposium expressed their understandings and expectations regarding the implications of the enhanced contributions by the East Asian countries to UN peace operations.
