About the Meeting

“A World Free from Fear: Challenges for the UN and Multilateralism” will examine the following:

• Fear brought about by conflict and violence, whether regional, interstate, or substrate, conflict resolution and prevention to address these issues;
• Fear of persecution, the challenges of human rights issues, and international human rights law to respond to the current human condition;
• Fear of environmental degradation and the capacity to reverse current trends;
• Fear of poverty and the means by which to close the gap between the haves and the have-nots; redirecting institutions and policy;
• Fear of weapons of mass destruction and other weapons such as landmines and the proliferation of small arms.
• The hope of pursuing a world free from fear and the capacity of and coherence within the UN system to address challenges of fear.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), Canada

Honorable William Graham was first elected a Liberal MP for Toronto Centre-Rosedale in 1993, Graham served from 1995 to 2002 as chairman of the standing committee of the House of Commons on foreign affairs and international trade. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in January 2002 under former prime minister Jean Chrétien and Minister of National Defence in July 2004 in the government of Paul Martin.

Use of Force Under the UN Charter, Restrictions and Loopholes

Nico Schrijver has ample experience as legal counsel in international litigation and appeared before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and specialized tribunals on international investment disputes. He also serves frequently as an expert in such proceedings.
