Summary
Mesfin Gebremichael (Assistant Professor, Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), Addis Ababa University) joins host Alistair Edgar for this Current Issues Podcast on “Engaging Higher Academic Institutions in African Peace and Security Affairs – African Vice Chancellors’ Debate at the Tana High-Level-Form.” Established in 2012, the Tana High-Level Forum (THLF) for security in Africa is an informal setting of state leaders that debates on the continent’s most pressing security challenges.

The recent Vice Chancellors’ debate at the Forum led to the creation of the 2015 Policy Brief, which is the focus of Dr Gebremichael and Dr Edgar’s discussion. The brief discusses the need to establish an African-level Council of Vice-Chancellors for peace and security studies. Addressing both regional and continental problems, the policy brief emphasises the role of universities in this network and in supporting such a Council.

The emphasis on collaboration and academic institutions mirrors the focus of IPSS. The institute offers both a “regular” MA and PhD in Peace and Security Studies, and a joint MA and PhD in Global Studies, which is a joint programme between IPSS and the University of Leipzig in Germany.

Dr Gebremichael and IPSS welcome collaboration with ACUNS members on future work. If you are interested in connecting with Dr Gebremichael please email the ACUNS Secretariat, [email protected]
