The latest article from ACUNS member Ian Urbina complements his investigative series on the Outlaw Ocean. In “Consumers and Lawmakers Take Steps to End Forced Labor in Fishing,” Urbina discusses a class-action lawsuit filed by consumers in California “in California against Mars, accusing the company, among the biggest producers of seafood-based pet food in the world, of failing to disclose its dependence on forced labor,” and a similar lawsuit that was filed against Nestlé in August. These lawsuits and similar actions from lawmakers and individuals call into question what companies are doing to prevent human trafficking in the seafood industry.
